Athletics
Pierce students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of athletic activities.

Town-wide Athletic Opportunities: Grades 5–8
The Town of Brookline sponsors opportunities for students from all eight elementary schools to participate in cross country during the fall and track and field during the spring. Practices and meets are free of charge.
Fall: Cross Country
The P.E. staff works together to help prepare students to run or jog one mile. The final meet is held at Larz Anderson Park.
Dates: Mid-September through mid-October
Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. Students may participate in all practices, but must attend at least two practices and be able to run or jog one mile in order to compete.
Practices: Practices are held after school several weeks prior to the meet. Training focuses on improving cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and overall fitness.
Team Size: Schools may bring as many participants as they choose. The P.E. staff determines participation based on student ability, effort, sportsmanship, and attendance. A participant list will be posted one week before the meet.
Permission Slips: Students selected for the meet will receive a permission slip that must be completed by a parent or guardian and returned to the P.E. staff.
Spring: Track and Field
The P.E. staff works with students to prepare them for a district-wide track and field meet involving all Brookline elementary schools. Students compete by grade level and division.
Dates: Mid-April through mid-May
Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. Students may participate in all practices, but must attend at least two practices in order to compete.
Practices: Practices are held after school several weeks before the meet and focus on building endurance, strength, and event-specific skills.
Team Size: The P.E. staff places students into events based on behavior, effort, and practice performance. Each event has a limited number of participant spots, so not all students may compete. Most students participate in one event, though some may compete in up to three events.
Permission Slips: Students selected for the meet will receive a permission slip that must be completed by a parent or guardian and returned to the P.E. staff.
